EDAP at the 4th International Symposium on Therapeutic Ultrasound (ISTU), Kyoto (Japan)

The 4 th International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound (ISTU) held in Kyoto, Japan, on September 18-20, 2004 was a great success. The growing interest for HIFU technology applied to the medical field reinforces the need for such International Society whose objectives are to encourage research on therapeutic ultrasound and promote international scientific and industrial cooperation. Many presentations were made on the use of therapeutic ultrasound to treat various tumors from kidney tumors to breast's, heart's, liver's, prostate's, etc…

The ISTU Symposium confirmed the leadership of Ablatherm as the first and most advanced approved product using High Intensity Focused therapeutic Ultrasound to treat localized prostate cancer. Dr Gelet, from Edouard Herriot Hospital, Lyon, France, presented his successful clinical results over 10 years using HIFU with Ablatherm and Dr. Thüroff, from Harlaching Hospital, Munich, Germany, shared his long experience of HIFU technology. Our Research Partner, INSERM, also presented its development programs, still experimental, on the application of therapeutic ultrasound to kidney tumors.

Mr. Hugues de Bantel, Chief Executive Officer of EDAP TMS, commented: "We can really observe the growing interest from the Scientific and Medical communities for this technology. Therapeutic ultrasound opens a new era of minimally-invasive treatments addressing various cancer indications at a lower medical cost ."

Installation of the first Ablatherm® in England

The Urology Department at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, has a solid reputation of pioneer in England. Being very innovation oriented, the urology team at Stepping Hill has always been involved in the latest available technologies, in order to bring to their patients the best possible treatments and up-to-date therapeutic options.

With the Ablatherm® , the Urology Department at Stepping Hill will be the first Hospital in England to offer HIFU treatments for localized prostate cancer.

Mr. Frederic Sottilini, Marketing Director of EDAP, comments: “It is a great opportunity for us to introduce HIFU in England in the best possible conditions, and to start a scientific co-operation with Dr. O'Reilly, the founder of the department, who is to be elected president of the BAUS (British Association of Urology Surgeons) this year.”

HIFU Treatment available to patients in some more French hospitals

As of April 2004, Amiens University Hospital will start HIFU treatments for localized prostate cancer with its own Ablatherm® . Pr. Petit and his team will share the device with 3 other hospitals (Lille, Rouen and Reims). The Ablatherm® will be used on a mobile basis and will spend 15 days in a row in each hospital.

Besides, a new mobile contract has been signed with the hospital in La Rochelle (Dr. Denis). This is the 14 th French hospital to use EDAP mobile service (first treatment session: end of March).

EDAP at the 56th Congress of the German Society for Urology (DGU), Wiesbaden (Germany)

EDAP participated in the 56 th Congress of the German Society for Urology (D.G.U.: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Urologie) held in Wiesbaden, Germany, on September 22-25, 2004. More than 3,000 Urologists attended the Congress where EDAP's "Meet the Experts" workshop achieved a real success. Ablatherm users were all very keen on sharing openly their HIFU experience with doctors coming to enquire about HIFU with Ablatherm applied to localized prostate tumors.

Judith Johannsen, General Manager of EDAP Germany, commented : "We are very enthusiastic about this growing interest for HIFU in Germany. We can tell that HIFU with Ablatherm made a real breakthrough at this year's DGU, which was confirmed by a larger number of Urologists coming to get information about this new treatment. Many of these physicians have had a positive feedback from their patients treated with HIFU and were enquiring about sharing an Ablatherm on a mobile basis ."

4 new Ablatherm® users in Germany

Besides 3 Ablatherm ® in Munich, Regensburg and Hamburg, we have had 4 new Ablatherm ® users since October 2003: Aachen University Hospital (Prof. Jakse), St. Antonius Hospital in Gronau (Dr. Witt), Klinikum Nordwest in Frankfurt (Prof. Becht), Missionsärztliche Klinik GmbH in Würzburg (Dr. Schön).
